The word Mahdi in Arabic means the guided one. Allah guides him.
Prophets and messengers such as Muhammad, Jesus, Moses, and Abraham were all guided by Allah through revelation. Moses was given the Torah, Jesus was given the Gospel, and Muhammad was given the Qur’an.
The #Mahdi is not given revelation like the other prophets and messengers but rather Allah guides him through worldly experience to the level of a prophet.
The Prophet explains this in a famous narration:
لبعث الله فيه رجلاً اسمه اسمي، وخلقه خلق
Paraphrased, it means: “Allah will send a man whose character will by like my character” so if we take the Prophet’s words seriously, the # Mahdi is equal to a prophet or a messenger.
